Dawn broke, and the final day was upon us. Just a few hills and 84km lay between us and our finish line. First, though, we stared gloomily out of the window and donned our rain jackets as the dregs of the previous day’s storm passed over Limanowa. It was going to be a wet one – starting from the moment we realised our shoes were still soggy from the night before (and for those who had made it to the disco bar, a little sticky).

After promising Dan that this would be nothing like the previous finish to Krakow where we had to hike our bikes through a field of wheat, we rolled out. We stopped rolling pretty soon after, as the road we had planned to cross the river on was flooded. Hike Europe was back (sorry Dan), but we lugged our bikes through what looked suspiciously like someone’s front garden, and were back on route. It was a spiky profile to the start of the day, with some short and steep climbs that (according to rumour) challenged even Artur – or as Willie had now dubbed him, “The Beast”. As a final slap in the face to those who were climb-o-phobic, on top of the last hill we faced an angry, snarling dog on the loose in the middle of the road. It was a close call for some, but our ankles remained bite-free thanks to some impressive turns of speed.

With this ordeal over, we made it to Wisniowa for a veritable festival of hospice visits – as well as the domestic hospice we had visited before, the town had embarked on the construction of a neurorehabilitation centre in a nearby village, as well as a residential hospice, which aimed to open its doors in the next four years. Anita and Kirstie handed over some oxygen concentrators to the domestic hospice. Shovelling down some early morning chicken nuggets, we saw a film about the planned neurorehabilitation centre, before the hospice volunteers led us to the building site for the new residential hospice. The beautiful views were slightly obscured by the drizzle, but we hope that the bricks we have donated will contribute to a truly special place for patients.

After picking out some building site mud from our cleats, we headed to Wieliczka, where we met a group of volunteers from the Alma Spei Children’s Hospice in Krakow, who had taken on the admirable challenge of accompanying some by-now stinky and saddle-sore cyclists to the finish line. We rolled along the Vistula river and swerved past oblivious pedestrians in the old town. The Alma Spei volunteers confidently led the way to the finish line – until we reached a gravelled hill, at which point some members of the group put their foot down and elected to go the long way round. Eventually, we had all assembled at the finish line via one route or another – with one notable exception, as usual.

Celebrations were in order – and what finer location than a young offenders’ rehabilitation institute on the outskirts of Krakow? The volunteers from Alma Spei made it a finish to remember, putting on a spread of pierogi big enough to fill the tummies of thirteen cyclists who had cycled over 1000km, friends, family, and volunteers. We heard about the work of the children’s hospice, the care they provide to terminally ill children, and the joy and lasting memories they bring to children and families by organising birthday events and photo shoots. We handed over a paediatric oxygen concentrator, which is essential to many of their patients’ care.

Finally, it was time for the official end of Cycle Europe 2024 – certificates were handed out and tears were shed. Willie and Krzys took the top fundraising prizes – having left his hairbrush at home and struggling with helmet hair all week, Willie received an Alina Foundation branded hairbrush, while speedy Krzys took home a personalised bike bell to make sure all road users were aware of his approach. Sabina took home the Polish “cyclist of the year” award, with some hand cream to soothe the hands that had taken on a beating from her handlebars all week. The winner of the international prize was indeed the “Man of the Tour”, Tad – who arrived just in time to collect his certificate and Alina Foundation socks!

One last group photo later, and it was time to pack up the bikes and fit all our awkwardly shaped luggage into taxis to go our separate ways – Willie and Dan somehow managed to wangle a removals lorry to take them to their hotels. All, that is, except for Artur, who got back on his bike to complete the remaining leg of his journey – all the way back to Vilnius, to complete 2000km (a feat that the rest of us will be supporting wholeheartedly from our sofas).

All that remains to be said is a huge thank you. To all our supporters, whether you donated or cheered us on online or in person – it made more difference than you know! To all our cyclists – your positivity and pedal power helped raise over £14,000, and we hope that you have seen first hand the difference that this will make to Polish and Lithuanian hospices. To Ewa and Janusz, for making the Foundation and the ride happen. To the hospice volunteers, for their generous hospitality, enormous plates of food and the incredible work they do year-round for their communities. And to Alina, who inspired this whole project – we hope we are doing you proud.

Wstał świt i nadszedł ostatni dzień. Już tylko kilka wzniesień i 84 km dzieliły nas od mety. Najpierw jednak spoglądaliśmy ponuro przez okno i zakładaliśmy kurtki przeciwdeszczowe,podczas gdy nad Limanową przechodzily resztki burzy z poprzedniego dnia. Zapowiadało się mokro - począwszy od momentu, w którym zdaliśmy sobie sprawę, że nasze buty są nadal przemoczone po poprzedniej nocy (a dla tych, którzy byli na dyskotece, tez trochę lepkie).

Obiecalismy Danowi, że dzien dzisiejszy nie będzie podobny do poprzedniego zakonczenia rajdu w Krakowie, kiedy to musieliśmy przeprowadzać rowery przez pole pszenicy  i wyruszyliśmy. Musielismy sie jednak zatrzymac bardzo szybko ponieważ droga, którą mielismy przejechac na druga strone rzeki była zalana. Zmienilismy sposob podrozy na Pieszo przez Europe  (przepraszam Dan) i przeprowadziliśmy nasze rowery przez coś, co wyglądało podejrzanie jak czyjś ogródek po czym wróciliśmy na trasę. Początek dnia byl troche ciezki, z kilkoma krótkimi ale stromymi podjazdami, które (według plotek) stanowiły wyzwanie nawet dla Artura - lub jak nazwał go Willie, "Bestii". Ostatecznym wyzwaniem, dla tych  którzy mieli fobię na punkcie wspinaczki,okazal sie  warczący wsciekly pies . Było groznie, ale udalo sie nam przyspieszyc i uniknelisny bolesnych ugryzień.

Po tych wstrzasajacych przejsciach dotarliśmy do Wiśniowej na istny festiwal wizyt hospicyjnych. Oprócz hospicjum domowego, które odwiedziliśmy  juz wcześniej, miasto rozpoczęło budowę ośrodka neurorehabilitacji , a także hospicjum stacjonarnego, majacego otworzyć swoje podwoje w ciągu najbliższych czterech lat. Anita i Kirstie przekazały domowemu hospicjum kilka koncentratorów tlenu. Po posilku obejrzeliśmy film o planowanym centrum neurorehabilitacji, a następnie wolontariusze hospicjum zaprowadzili nas na plac budowy nowego hospicjum stacjonarnego. Piękne widoki zostały nieco przesłonięte przez mżawkę, ale mamy nadzieję, że cegiełki, które przekazaliśmy, przyczynią się do powstania naprawdę wyjątkowego miejsca dla pacjentów.

Nastepnie udaliśmy się do Wieliczki, gdzie spotkaliśmy grupę wolontariuszy z Krakowskiego Hospicjum dla Dzieci Alma Spei. Podjęli się oni godnego podziwu wyzwania towarzyszac spoconym i obolałym rowerzystom. Jechaliśmy wzdłuż Wisły i miedzy przechodniami na Starym Mieście. Wolontariusze Alma Spei pewnie prowadzili nas do mety, ale kiedy dotarliśmy do żwirowego wzgórza niektórzy członkowie grupy zbuntowali sie  i wybrali inna, dłuższą drogę. Ostatecznie wszyscy dotarlismy na mete - jak zwykle z jednym wyjatkiem.

Trzeba było świętować - a czy może być lepsze miejsce niż zakład resocjalizacyjny dla młodocianych przestępców na obrzeżach Krakowa? Wolontariusze z Alma Spei sprawili, że była niezapomniana uroczystosc, serwujac wystarczajaco duzo pierogow tak, ze starczylo ich dla trzynastu rowerzystów, którzy przejechali ponad 1000 km a takze dla naszych przyjaciół, rodziny i wolontariuszy. Opowiedzieli nam o pracy hospicjum dziecięcego, opiece, jaką zapewniają nieuleczalnie chorym dzieciom, a także o radości i trwałych wspomnieniach, jakie przynoszą dzieciom i rodzinom, organizując imprezy urodzinowe i sesje zdjęciowe. Przekazaliśmy koncentrator tlenu pediatrycznego, który jest niezbędny w opiece nad wieloma pacjentami.

Wreszcie nadszedł czas na oficjalne zakończenie Cycle Europe 2024 - rozdano certyfikaty i uroniono łzy. Willie i Krzyś zgarnęli główne nagrody za zbiórkę pieniędzy. Willie, który zostawił szczotkę do włosów w domu i przez cały tydzień walczyl z włosami pod  kaskiem, otrzymał szczotkę do włosów marki Alina Foundation, podczas gdy szybki Krzyś zabrał do domu spersonalizowany dzwonek rowerowy, ktory pozwoli by wszyscy użytkownicy dróg wiedzieli kiedy ich wyprzedza. Sabina zabrała do domu polską nagrodę "rowerzysty roku" oraz krem do rąk. Międzynarodowa nagrode otrzymal oczywiście "Czlowiek Rajdu", Tad - który przybył w samą porę, aby odebrać swój dyplom i skarpetki Fundacji Babci Aliny!

Po ostatnim grupowym zdjęciu nadszedł czas, aby spakować rowery i upchnac wszystkie nasze nieporęczne bagaże do taksówek i udać się w swoje strony. Williemu i Danowi jakoś udało się zalatwic ciężarówkę do przeprowadzek, ktora zabrala ich do hoteli. Wyjątkiem byl  Artur, który wsiadł na rower, aby ukończyć ostatni etap swojej podrózy do Wilna, pokonujac w sumie 2000 km. Wszyscy podziwiamy jego wyczyn, ale juz z daleka.

Pozostaly nam tylko podziekowania. Dziekujemy wszystkim wspierającym, bez względu na to, czy przekazali darowiznę, czy kibicowali nam online lub osobiście – nawet nie wiecie jak bardzo nam pomogliscie! Dziekujemy wszystkim naszym rowerzystom - wasze pozytywne nastawienie i ciezka praca pomogły zebrać ponad 14 000 funtów.  Mamy nadzieję, że na własne oczy zobaczyliście jaka to pomoc dla polskich i litewskich hospicjów. Ewie i Januszowi dziekujemy za zorganizowanie Fundacji i przejazdu. Wolontariuszom hospicyjnym za ich hojną gościnność, ogromne talerze jedzenia i niesamowitą pracę, którą wykonują przez cały rok dla swoich społeczności. I Alinie, która zainspirowała cały projekt - mamy nadzieję, że jestes z nas dumna.

After yesterday’s horrors today we were promised a “flat, mostly downhill day”. So, of course, the day started with a 5km climb, one part was so steep that I almost fell off. Confidence was not helped by several pelotons roaming around the countryside with race numbers emblazoned across their chests.

Climb completed, there was indeed the promised downhill. 20-odd glorious kilometres with minimal effort and beautiful Malopolska countryside. Following a supermarket stop we headed towards Nowy Sacz. On the way, clearly jealous of Tad’s treatment by a group of buxom nurses in Bielsko-Biala, Willie decided to take a tumble on cobble stones. Though we have a doctor and a vet in the group, immediate first aid was provided by a local drunk.

After patching Willie’s elbow and bike up, we continued onto a petrol station in Nowy Sacz where we were escorted to the particularly impressive looking Sadeckie Hospice by a group of local Scouts. At the hospice Willie had to make do with Anita's medical treatment, not a buxom nurse in sight. The rest of us were greeted by the deputy mayor of the city and the Director of the Hospice, and we were served a hearty meal by hospice volunteers. Following lunch, during our tour the director explained that the building of the hospice was possible because the city granted them a large piece of land and a local architect produced the drawings free of charge. Janusz then formally handed over three oxygen concentrators that were purchased using funds raised by this year’s ride.

We then headed back out to be greeted by an extremely ominous grey cloud. While some light drizzle would’ve been welcome after the week’s sweltering conditions, what was to follow certainly was not. A few kilometres into the afternoon the heavens opened, giving this year’s riders the annual Cycle Poland soaking. Undeterred, we powered on to Limanowa. The lovely downhill into the town that I’m convinced I remember from 2016 has mysteriously disappeared and been replaced with undulating roads, a fairground plonked in the middle of the route and some pretty moody drivers.

Incredibly, tonight’s hotel has an upgrade on last night’s “disco bar”, a live DJ with free tickets and drink token for hotel guests. A Saturday night partying in Limanowa awaits… life complete!

Po wczorajszych okropnościach dziś obiecano nam "płaski, głównie zjazdowy dzień". Oczywiście dzień zaczął się od 5-kilometrowego podjazdu, którego jedna część była tak stroma, że prawie sie przewrocilam. Na dodatek pewności siebie  nie dodawały nam grupy kolarzy biorące udział w lokalnym wyscigu kolarskim.

Po podjezdzie obiecany zjazd. 20-kilka wspaniałych kilometrów z minimalnym wysiłkiem i pięknymi małopolskimi krajobrazami. Po postoju w supermarkecie ruszyliśmy w stronę Nowego Sącza i wtedy wyraźnie zazdrosny o to, jak Tad zostal opatrzony przez grupę pięknych pielęgniarek w Bielsku-Białej, Willie postanowił zaliczyć upadek na bruku. Choć w grupie mamy lekarza i weterynarza, natychmiastowej pierwszej pomocy udzielił mu miejscowy pijak.

Po opatrzeniu łokcia i naprawie roweru Williego pojechaliśmy dalej na stację benzynową w Nowym Sącz. Skad,eskortowani przez grupę lokalnych harcerzy, dotarlismy do szczególnie imponująco wyglądającego Sądeckiego Hospicjum. W hospicjum Willie musiał się poddac pod opieke Anity,  w zasięgu wzroku nie było bowiem żadnej ponętnej pielęgniarki. Reszta z nas została powitana przez zastępcę burmistrza miasta i dyrektora hospicjum, a wolontariusze hospicjum podali nam obfity posiłek. Po obiedzie dyrektor wyjaśnił, że budowa hospicjum była możliwa, ponieważ miasto przyznało im duży kawałek ziemi, a lokalny architekt bezpłatnie je zaprojektowal. Następnie Janusz oficjalnie przekazał trzy koncentratory tlenu, które zostały zakupione ze środków zebranych podczas tegorocznego przejazdu.

Wyruszajac z hospicjum zauwazylismy niezwykle złowieszczo wygladajaca chmure. Chociaż lekka mżawka byłaby mile widziana po upalnym tygodniu, to co nastąpilo, z pewnością nie było. Po kilku kilometrach lunelo i zgodnie z tradycja przemoczylo kompletnie uczestnikow tegorocznego rajdu. Niezrażeni ruszyliśmy do Limanowej. Piękny zjazd do miasta, który pamiętam z 2016 roku, w tajemniczy sposób zniknął i została droga z pagorkami, wesołym miasteczkiem umieszczonym na środku trasy i niespejalnie uprzejmymi kierowcami.

Niewiarygodne, że dzisiejszy hotel jest nawet lepszy niz wczorajszy,prawdziwy  DJ i bezplatne bilety oraz żetony na drinki dla gości hotelowych. Sobotnia noc imprezowania w Limanowej przed nami...życie na calego!

Following our leisurely “rest day”, it was quite a shock to the system to be once again shovelling down breakfast and packing up in time to be on the road for 8am (shockingly, we did not leave punctually). Fortunately, though, we reached Zywiec hospice after a mere 20km, and were greeted with second breakfast. Never have a group of cyclists looked so weary when faced with a table laden with food. Not ones to turn down a challenge however, we tackled the plates of cheese, salad and salmon with considerably more gusto than we tackle most climbs. We heard from the hospice chaplain about the work that the domestic hospice in Zywiec do, the inspiration they take from St Faustyna, and the personal link that drew him to hospice chaplaincy via his experience living through leukaemia. Tad and Krzys presented the hospice with oxygen concentrators and mattresses.

Departing with bellies and hearts full (and Janusz sporting some new headgear), we braced ourselves for the first climb of the day – thankfully we all knew what to expect, as Tom had been reciting the distance and gradient of each Day 6 climb for the past few days whenever he was given the opportunity (some say even in his sleep). Through Korbielow, we continued to climb up to the border – after some confusion, we confirmed that we had indeed reached Slovakia, and hadn’t jumped across the continent to Slovenia. Our first impressions of Slovakia were formed on the descent as we passed through village after village playing traditional music and local announcements via speakers on every telegraph pole – initially quite endearing, the disembodied voices blaring out in quiet villages took on a slightly sinister note.

One gloriously long descent later, we pulled up at a lakeside restaurant, complete with stunning views and swimming pool. We were sad to leave without taking a dip, but the guests in their swimming costumes were looking at a group of grubby, sweaty cyclists with mild disgust, so felt it was best not to. Thankfully, the big guy was clearly feeling sorry for us, and we were greeted with our first rain shower since Prague. There’s nothing like the refreshing mixture of sweat, road grime, drizzle and suncream to cool a cyclist down. Eventually the drizzle cleared and we were faced with stunning panoramas of the Tatra mountains, made even more spectacular by the fact that we were able to view them from twenty kilometres of smooth, traffic-free cycle path – full marks to Slovakia!

Crossing back into Poland marked the start of our next big climb. We huffed and puffed through the kilometres, and felt genuinely proud of ourselves when we emerged at the top of Gubalowka – only to take a left turn and find the entire summer tourist population of Zakopane had taken the chairlift up and were enjoying a gentle stroll amongst the dozens of tourist tat stalls, taking no heed of the cyclists trying to weave their way through.

A painfully long time later, we were finally off the hill and met with our final climb of the day – made a little brighter by the rainbow leading our way to the hotel. The views were awe-inspiring, and were best enjoyed from the jacuzzi. Over dinner, we had a fundraising update from Janusz – final totals still pending, but things are looking good!

While some of the team enjoyed the delights of the jacuzzi and the “disco-bar”, the Man of the Tour was living up to his title, demonstrating his resilience as he pedalled on through the darkness, thunder, rain and distant lightning which lit up the mountain range. He soldiered on to the hotel, declining rescue by the van, and arriving after 10pm – true determination!

Troche zaskoczylo nas, ze po wczorajszym spokojnym "dniu odpoczynku" znowu  musielismy sie spieszyc by zjeść śniadanie, spakować się by wyruszyc o 8 rano (nic dziwnego, że nie wyjechaliśmy punktualnie). Na szczęście po zaledwie 20 km dotarliśmy do żywieckiego hospicjum, gdzie przywitano nas drugim śniadaniem. Nigdy jeszcze grupa rowerzystów nie wyglądała tak niepewnie w obliczu stołu zastawionego jedzeniem. Stawilismy jednak czola temu wyzwaniu,  talerze z serem, sałatką i łososiem pokonaliśmy z większym zapałem niż większość podjazdów. Kapelan hospicjum opowiedzial nam o pracy, jaką wykonuje hospicjum domowe w Żywcu, o inspiracji, jaką czerpie od św. Faustyny, a także o osobistym doswiadczeniu życia z białaczką, które przyciągnąło go do kapelaństwa hospicyjnego. Tad i Krzyś przekazali hospicjum koncentratory tlenu i materace.

Wyjechalismy z wypełnionymi brzuchami i sercami ( Janusz nawet w nowym nakryciu głowy), przygotowani na pierwszą wspinaczkę tego dnia. Na szczęście wszyscy wiedzieliśmy, czego się spodziewać, ponieważ Tom, przy kazdej okazji (niektórzy twierdzą, że nawet we śnie) informowal o  dystansie i nachyleniu każdej wspinaczki dnia 6. Przez Korbielów kontynuowaliśmy wspinaczkę do granicy - po pewnym zamieszaniu potwierdziliśmy, że rzeczywiście dotarliśmy na Słowację, a nie do Słowenii. Nasze pierwsze wrażenia ze Słowacji ukształtowały się podczas zjazdu, gdy mijajac wioskę za wioską, sluchalismy  muzyki ludowej i lokalnych komunikatow nadawanych przez głośniki na słupach telegraficznych. Początkowo  bylo to całkiem przyjemne, ale po jakims czasie brzmialo to nieco złowieszczo..

Po wspaniałym, długim zjeździe zatrzymaliśmy się w restauracji nad jeziorem, z pięknymi widokami i basenem. Żal nam było wyjezdzac bez kąpieli, ale goście w kostiumach kąpielowych patrzyli na grupę brudnych, spoconych rowerzystów z lekkim obrzydzeniem, więc uznaliśmy, że lepiej tego nie robić. Na szczęście  los nam sprzyjal i spadl pierwszy deszcz od czasu Pragi. Nie ma to jak orzeźwiająca mieszanka potu, brudu drogowego, mżawki i kremu do opalania, by ochłodzić rowerzystę.  W końcu mżawka ustąpiła i naszym oczom ukazały się wspaniałe panoramy Tatr, jeszcze bardziej spektakularne dzięki temu, że mogliśmy je podziwiać z dwudziestu kilometrów gładkiej, wolnej od ruchu ścieżki rowerowej - pełne uznanie dla Słowacji!

Powrót do Polski oznaczał początek naszej kolejnej wielkiej wspinaczki. Z trudem pokonywaliśmy kolejne kilometry i czuliśmy się z siebie naprawdę dumni, gdy dotarlismy na szczyt Gubałówki. Niestety po skręcie w lewo odkrylismy, że wszyscy zakopianscy turysci wyjechali wlasnie wyciągiem krzesełkowym na górę i spaceruja wśród dziesiątkow straganów, nie zważając na rowerzystów próbujących utorować sobie drogę.
Duzo, duzo pozniej udalo nam sie w końcu zjechaliśmy ze wzgórza i zmierzyc się z naszą ostatnią wspinaczką tego dnia - nieco jaśniejszą dzięki tęczy prowadzącej nas do hotelu. Widoki były zachwycające, a najlepiej podziwiało się je z jacuzzi. Podczas kolacji otrzymaliśmy od Janusza aktualizację dotyczącą zbierania funduszy - ostateczna suma nie jest jeszcze znana, ale wygląda dobrze!

Podczas gdy część zespołu korzystała z uroków jacuzzi i "disco-baru", Tad potwierdzal, ze tytul Czlowieka Rajdu zdecydowanie sie mu nalezy, demonstrując swoją odporność, pedałując w ciemności,w deszczu przy grzmotach i odległych błyskawicach, rozświetlajacych pasmo górskie. Dojechał do hotelu, odmawiając ratunku ze strony furgonetki i docierając na miejsce po 22:00 - prawdziwa determinacja!

When a certain Pan J. Holender informed me that this year would include the first ever optional circular day I was thrilled. Visions were had of a relaxing day in Bielsko-Biala’s main square, supping a coffee perhaps, or even a piwo or three. I packed a book especially. Maybe even a well-deserved massage could be squeezed in.

Well, it turns out, that “optional” means that everyone else is doing it, there are two hospice stops and Muggins (yes, it’s me again) is down to formally hand over the equipment. “Don’t worry”, Panie E & A Holender reassure me, “it’s a flat day”. As a CP veteran I really shouldn’t have been reassured but sometimes you believe what you want to believe.

Bike prepared, I switch the navigation on and what do I see before me? 10 climbs. My relaxing summer’s day is but a dream away. My day could’ve started off worse though, I could be a baby that has just been smothered in toothpaste rather than suncream. A fate that unfortunately befell Gabi. Dave’s claim to have “nailed parenting” unravelling as quickly as a J. Holender promise.

In fairness, the ride got off to an easy start with 3 to 4 kilometres of downhill terrain (of course, we’d be returning later, climbing this very same hill). After 40km of smooth roads and brick-surface cycle lanes clearly designed by a bureaucrat from the Polish Ministry of Cycling Affairs who has never sat on a bike we arrived at Sw. Ojciec Pio Hospice in Pszczyna.

Over an excellent lunch, the Assistant Manager of the Hospice outlined all the incredible work they do in the local area and thanked us for our efforts and support. Kirstie and I formally handed over the equipment. Kirstie with a well-worded and rehearsed speech, myself with a few mumbled words including pretending to remember my previous visit in 2019. Proof was provided minutes later when we were shown a slideshow of pictures from our last visit, Tad kindly commented (in Polish) that I looked a bit chubby in those days. I’ll take this as a compliment.
Speaking of Mr Belina, the contender of “Man of the Ride” cemented his status yesterday when, in a Cycle Poland first, his unique cycling style led to his being pulled over by the police and breathalysed. Today was a less eventful affair for the Wisla One until he decided he’d enjoy the company of the kindly nurses at the second hospice so took a tumble just outside Bielsko-Biala.

For the rest of us, the ride between Pszczyna and Bielsko-Biala was less eventful. This was a relief given that several of us had received a message from the Polish Michael Fish informing us that a violent thunderstorm with high winds and hail was on the way. Nevertheless, the hills on the “flat”, “optional” day kept coming thick and fast, and being a circular ride not far from a city we had the “joy” of encountering Polish drivers and their glorious 1980s attitude to cyclists. After being cut up, sworn at and ignored for a while it was nice to see some friendly and familiar faces at the Bielsko-Biala hospice, one that the Alina Foundation has supported since its inception. Being the hospice closest to Ewa’s heart, she and Dave formally handed over this year’s batch of equipment. We were all shown around the building and, in a moving moment, met a patient who informed us of her story and thanked us for our support.

After the hospice, and weighed down by cake and good wishes, just climb number 10 stood between us and the hotel with its welcoming air-conditioned lobby. After 5km we were back, the “optional” day completed, we now prepare for what has already become known as “the dreaded Day 6”. Two climbs the size of yesterday’s, the police are on high alert, but the Wisla One remains blissfully ignorant (unless he reads of this blog) of what awaits him…

Kiedy niejaki Pan J. Holender poinformował mnie, że w tym roku odbędzie się pierwszy w historii opcjonalny dzień okrężny, byłem podekscytowany. Miałem wizję relaksującego dnia na bielskim rynku, popijając kawę, a nawet piwo lub trzy. Specjalnie spakowałem książkę. Może nawet uda się wcisnąć zasłużony masaż.

Cóż, okazuje się, że "opcjonalnie" oznacza, że wszyscy inni to robią, są dwa przystanki hospicyjne, a Muggins (tak, to znowu ja) ma oficjalnie przekazać sprzęt. "Nie martw się", zapewniają mnie Panie E i A Holender, "to płaski dzień". Jako CP weteran naprawdę nie powinienem być uspokajany, ale czasami wierzysz w to, w co chcesz wierzyć.

Rower przygotowany, włączam nawigację i co widzę przed sobą? 10 podjazdów. Mój relaksujący letni dzień stał się tylko marzeniem. Mój dzień mógł się jednak zacząć gorzej, mógłbym być dzieckiem, które właśnie zostało posmarowane pastą do zębów zamiast kremem do opalania. Los, który niestety spotkał Gabi. Twierdzenie Dave'a o "wspanialym rodzicielstwie" rozpada się tak szybko, jak obietnica J. Holendra.

Trzeba uczciwie przyznać, że jazda rozpoczęła się łatwo, od 3 do 4 kilometrów zjazdu (oczywiście później wracaliśmy, wspinając się na to samo wzgórze). Po 40 km gładkich dróg i ścieżek rowerowych o ceglanej nawierzchni, wyraźnie zaprojektowanych przez biurokratę z polskiego Ministerstwa Spraw Rowerowych, który nigdy nie siedział na rowerze, dotarliśmy do Hospicjum Św. Oyca Pio w Pszczynie.
Podczas wyśmienitego lunchu zastępca kierownika Hospicjum przedstawił całą niesamowitą pracę, jaką wykonują w okolicy i podziękował nam za nasze wysiłki i wsparcie. Kirstie i ja oficjalnie przekazaliśmy sprzęt. Kirstie z dobrze sformułowanym i przećwiczonym przemówieniem, ja z kilkoma niewyraźnymi słowami, w tym udając, że pamiętam moją poprzednią wizytę w 2019 roku. Dowód został dostarczony kilka minut później, kiedy pokazano nam pokaz slajdów ze zdjęć z naszej ostatniej wizyty, Tad uprzejmie skomentował (po polsku), że w tamtych czasach wyglądałem trochę pulchnie. Potraktuję to jako komplement.

Mówiąc o panu Belinie, pretendent do tytułu "Man of the Ride" ugruntował swój status wczoraj, kiedy to, po raz pierwszy w historii Cycle Poland, jego unikalny styl jazdy doprowadził do zatrzymania go przez policję i przebadania alkomatem. Dzisiejszy dzień był mniej obfitujący w wydarzenia dla wiślanina, dopóki nie zdecydował, że będzie cieszył się towarzystwem uprzejmych pielęgniarek z drugiego hospicjum, więc zaliczył upadek tuż za Bielskiem-Białą.

Dla reszty z nas jazda między Pszczyną a Bielskiem-Białą była mniej obfitująca w wydarzenia. To była ulga, biorąc pod uwagę, że kilku z nas otrzymało wiadomość od polskiego Michaela Fisha, informującą nas, że w drodze jest gwałtowna burza z silnym wiatrem i gradem. Niemniej jednak, wzniesienia w tym "płaskim", "opcjonalnym" dniu pojawiały się gęsto i szybko, a będąc na okrężnej przejażdżce niedaleko miasta, mieliśmy "radość" napotkania polskich kierowców i ich chwalebnego podejścia do rowerzystów z lat 80-tych. Po tym, jak zostaliśmy pocięci, przeklęci i zignorowani przez chwilę, miło było zobaczyć przyjazne i znajome twarze w hospicjum w Bielsku-Białej, które Fundacja Alina wspiera od samego początku. Będąc hospicjum najbliższym sercu Ewy, ona i Dave oficjalnie przekazali tegoroczną partię sprzętu. Wszyscy zostaliśmy oprowadzeni po budynku, a we wzruszającym momencie spotkaliśmy się z pacjentką, która opowiedziała nam swoją historię i podziękowała za wsparcie.

Po hospicjum, obciążeni ciastem i dobrymi życzeniami, tylko podjazd numer 10 dzielił nas od hotelu z przytulnym, klimatyzowanym lobby. Po 5 km byliśmy z powrotem, dzień "opcjonalny" zakończony, teraz przygotowujemy się do tego, co już stało się znane jako "przerażający dzień 6". Dwa podjazdy wielkości wczorajszego, policja w pogotowiu, ale wiślanin pozostaje w błogiej nieświadomości (chyba, że czyta tego bloga) tego, co go czeka...

For days now, there had been talk around the breakfast and dinner tables of “the big climb” on day 4. Some said it was a whopping 15km long. Others talked of horrifying gradients. Today, we rose with trepidation, as it was finally time for “the big climb”. Before the road began to rise, though, we had quite a lot to get through.

A smaller group than usual left the hotel, with some having left early to make sure we arrived at our scheduled meeting points on time, while some (Ewa) simply struggled to corral both Dave and a baby into a presentable state by departure time.

The main theme of the morning was “hot”. Thankfully the miles ticked by reasonably quickly, and we crossed the Polish/Czech border for our ninth and final time this trip to arrive at yet another Biedronka for a quick raid of the ice cream section, and a spirited debate on the relative contributions of mango and pineapple to chilled smoothies. It seemed that the heat was getting to us.

We pressed on to Skoczow for our second hospice visit of the trip. Once again, we were a little too punctual – we decided this couldn’t happen again, so duly made ourselves late by jumping in the river for a much needed cool-down before rolling into the centre of town.

We may have taken the volunteers by surprise as we emerged from the “wrong” end of the street, but we were welcomed warmly, being led into the hospice by an army of scooters and showered with confetti. Skoczow hospice is always a joy to visit, and for many of us today’s visit was really special as the last time we had visited, the residential hospice had been a building site. Now it was home to fifteen residents and an army of volunteers, filled with books and paintings and smiles – and even a piano on which residents and visitors can play.

We met several of the patients who explained to us what a difference the hospice had made to them. We spoke to Ola, who had come to the hospice severely unwell following sepsis was now beginning to walk and was looking forward to getting home to see her grandchildren. We then met Maciek, who had been a cyclist, but had a serious accident over a year ago which had resulted in quadriplegia, and had been given a 1% chance of survival, but was now well on the road to recovery. These conversations showed us what incredible care the patients receive, how hard the volunteers work, and how lucky we are to be able to ride our bikes to support them. Sabina and Marcin presented one of ten bedside shelving units that had been bought by the Alina Foundation to help furnish the hospice, with more equipment still in the works!

An incredible spread meant that we were definitely well-fuelled for the next portion of the ride: enough dumplings for a small army and a cake larger than Gabi went down beautifully alongside some homemade lemonade and an impromptu piano concert from Kirstie. All too soon, though, it was time to depart into the baking sun. We pedalled along the river, where the entire population of southern Poland seemed to be taunting us as they splashed around in the afternoon heat. The signs for ski stations increased in frequency, signalling what was just around the corner – “the big climb” at 100km into the day. We could avoid it no longer – the road went up, and so did we. We climbed and climbed and climbed, with the trees providing little respite from the heat. From the final hairpin, though, the top was in sight, and – was it a mirage? No, it was the hero of the hour – Artur, holding out an ice-cold Coca-Cola for each cyclist as they reached the summit. (Obviously, Artur had made it up the climb with no problems and was looking disappointingly fresh as the rest of us gasped our way up to him.)

From here, it was downhill (almost) all the way to the end of the ride, with several of the group attacking the descent so fiercely they managed to beat Janusz and the van to the hotel by quite some margin. After the heat of today, a cold beer has never tasted so good. Having reduced our core temperatures to something approximating normal, we sat down to dinner with family and friends, including the volunteers from St Camil’s hospice in Bielsko-Biala. This is the hospice that had looked after Alina over fifteen years ago now, and saying thank you to them is how the Foundation started. They told us how their domestic hospice worked, and how the bariatric bed the Foundation had bought for them was already in use after arriving two days ago. Anita and Tom nevertheless managed to present an imaginary bed without too much elaborate miming.

Once we’d finished up with the amusing game that the international contingent have developed– “using unnecessarily complicated language for Anita to translate” – we said goodnight, triple-checked that we weren’t hallucinating the football score after a day of potential heat stroke, and went off to our beds. We’re all very ready for our lie-in and “not quite a rest day” tomorrow! I, meanwhile, will be off to find an English-Polish dictionary.

Od kilku dni przy śniadaniu i kolacji mówiło się o "wielkim podjeździe" w dniu 4. Niektórzy mówili, że będzie miał aż 15 km długości. Inni mówili o przerażających nachyleniach. Dziś wstaliśmy z niepokojem, bo w końcu nadszedł czas na "wielki podjazd". Zanim jednak droga zaczęła się wznosić, mieliśmy sporo do pokonania.

Mniejsza grupa niż zwykle opuściła hotel, niektórzy wyruszyli wcześniej, aby dotrzec do zaplanowanych punktów spotkań na czas, podczas gdy niektórzy (Ewa) po prostu walczyli o to, aby zarówno Dave, jak i dziecko byli gotowi do wyjazdu.

Głównym tematem poranka było "gorąco". Na szczęście kilometry mijały dość szybko i przekroczyliśmy granicę polsko-czeską po raz dziewiąty i ostatni w tej podróży, aby dotrzeć do kolejnej Biedronki na szybka wizyte w sekcji lodów i ożywioną debatę na temat roli mango i ananasa w  schłodzonych koktajlach. Wyglądało na to, że upał daje nam się we znaki.

Udaliśmy się do Skoczowa na naszą drugą wizytę w hospicjum. Po raz kolejny byliśmy trochę zbyt punktualni - zdecydowaliśmy, że to się nie może powtórzyć, więc spóźniliśmy się, wskakując do rzeki, aby się ochłodzić, zanim wjechaliśmy do centrum miasta.

Być może zaskoczyliśmy wolontariuszy, wyłaniając się z "niewłaściwego" końca ulicy, ale zostaliśmy ciepło powitani, wprowadzeni do hospicjum przez armię skuterów i obsypani konfetti. Hospicjum w Skoczowie zawsze odwiedza się z przyjemnością, a dla wielu z nas dzisiejsza wizyta była naprawdę wyjątkowa, ponieważ ostatnim razem, gdy je odwiedziliśmy, hospicjum stacjonarne było placem budowy. Teraz jest domem dla piętnastu pensjonariuszy i armii wolontariuszy, wypełnionym książkami, obrazami i uśmiechami - a nawet pianinem, na którym mogą grać pensjonariusze i goście.

Spotkaliśmy się z kilkoma pacjentami, którzy wyjaśnili nam, jak wiele zmieniło dla nich hospicjum. Rozmawialiśmy z Olą, która trafiła do hospicjum w ciężkim stanie po sepsie, a teraz zaczyna chodzić i nie może się doczekać powrotu do domu, aby zobaczyć swoje wnuki. Następnie spotkaliśmy się z Maćkiem, który był rowerzystą, ale ponad rok temu uległ poważnemu wypadkowi, w wyniku którego doznał porażenia czterokończynowego i dawano mu 1% szans na przeżycie, ale teraz jest na dobrej drodze do wyzdrowienia. Te rozmowy pokazały nam, jak niesamowitą opiekę otrzymują pacjenci, jak ciężko pracują wolontariusze i jakie mamy szczęście, że możemy jeździć na rowerach, aby ich wspierać. Sabina i Marcin zaprezentowali jeden z dziesięciu regałów przyłóżkowych zakupionych przez Fundację Alina, aby pomóc wyposażyć hospicjum, a kolejne sprzęty wciąż są w przygotowaniu!

Wspanialy poczęstunek oznaczał, że byliśmy zdecydowanie dobrze nakarmieni na następną część jazdy:  ilość pierogów wystarczająca dla małej armii i ciasto większe niż Gabi popijane domową lemoniadą plus improwizowany koncert fortepianowy Kirstie zachwycily wszystkich. Zbyt szybko jednak nadszedł czas, by wyruszyć w piekącym słońcu. Pedałowaliśmy wzdłuż rzeki, gdzie cała populacja południowej Polski zdawała się drwić z nas, pluskając się w popołudniowym upale. Znaki stacji narciarskich pojawiały się coraz częściej, sygnalizując to, co było tuż za rogiem - "wielki podjazd" po juz przejechanych w tym dniu100 km. Nie mogliśmy tego już dłużej unikać - droga pięła się w górę, a my wraz z nią. Wspinaliśmy się, wspinaliśmy i wspinaliśmy, a drzewa nie dawały wytchnienia od upału. Jednak od ostatniego zakrętu szczyt był w zasięgu wzroku i - czy to był miraż? Nie, to był bohater tej godziny - Artur, trzymający lodowatą Coca-Colę dla każdego rowerzysty, który dotarł na szczyt. (Oczywiście Artur pokonał podjazd bez żadnych problemów i wyglądał rozczarowująco świeżo, gdy reszta z nas z trudem do niego dotarła).

Od tego miejsca było już z górki (prawie) do samego końca, a kilku członków grupy atakowało zjazd tak zaciekle, że udało im się wyprzedzić Janusza i furgonetkę do hotelu. Po dzisiejszym upale zimne piwo nigdy nie smakowało tak dobrze. Po obniżeniu temperatury ciała do poziomu zbliżonego do normalnego, zasiedliśmy do kolacji z rodziną i przyjaciółmi, w tym z wolontariuszami z hospicjum św. Kamila w Bielsku-Białej. Jest to hospicjum, które opiekowało się Aliną ponad piętnaście lat temu, a podziękowania dla nich są początkiem Fundacji. Opowiedzieli nam, jak działa ich domowe hospicjum i jak łóżko bariatryczne, które zakupiła dla nich Fundacja, było już w użyciu po przyjeździe dwa dni temu. Anicie i Tomowi udało się jednak symbolicznie ‘przekazac’ to łóżko.

Kiedy już skończyliśmy z zabawną grą, opracowana przez międzynarodowy kontyngent - "używanie niepotrzebnie skomplikowanego języka do tłumaczenia przez Anitę" - powiedzieliśmy dobranoc, trzy razy sprawdziliśmy, czy po dniu potencjalnego udaru cieplnego nie mamy halucynacji widzac wynik meczu piłki nożnej i udaliśmy się do naszych łóżek. Wszyscy jesteśmy bardzo gotowi na jutrzejsze wylegiwanie się i "niezupełny dzień odpoczynku"! Ja tymczasem ide  poszukać słownika angielsko-polskiego.

The day began with a surprisingly gentle climb, on a surprisingly good road surface, up to the surprisingly scenic Polish-Czech border crossing. From here was a similarly smooth descent. Tom used this as an opportunity to attempt to break the land speed record, while the rest of us descended far more sedately, and met him at the bottom, relieved to find all limbs intact. A gradual downhill 40km took us to Nysa, where, in a Cycle Europe first, we were early for a hospice visit. The team took this unprecedented opportunity to faff without our illustrious leader shouting at them to hurry up, and seized the chance to fix punctures, utilise the only free public toilets in Poland, and generally lay around.

Punctually, we arrived at the Sw. Arnold Janssen hospice in Nysa, where we were met by the hospice director and other volunteers. As the youngest participant, and therefore the number one attraction, the Gabatron was promptly passed around every member of the hospice team, and quite possibly some passers-by. Meanwhile, we learned about the hospice team, the fifteen patients in residential care at the hospice, and the one hundred patients looked after in their own homes. For many of the team, it was their first visit to a hospice, so meeting the team and patients was a truly eye-opening experience. Willie and Janusz presented two oxygen concentrators, which are essential equipment for many terminal illnesses, and which can each be used to help multiple patients. We were also pleased to hear that equipment we provided when we last visited Nysa in 2014 was still in use!

Well-fed and watered (despite some challenging cutlery), we were back on the road – and what a road it was. A seemingly endless A-road, in the searing heat, with minimal hard shoulder and a surprising amount of traffic for a Tuesday lunchtime. Around twenty kilometres later, we’d never been happier to see a right-hand turn, on to some much more pleasant side roads, which even occasionally featured some shade. The side roads eventually delivered us to Glubczyce, where some impressive architecture was significantly overshadowed by the allure of the Biedronka supermarket with its air conditioning, cold beverages, and ice cream. As the mercury crept over 30C, Tom decided that some drastic measures were in order, treating himself to a multipack of watermelon lollies.

As was now expected, we learned that Tad was not where we expected him to be. Like a rare bird, whispers went round the group of rumoured sightings and possible routes of migration, but there was little in the way of concrete evidence. (Don’t panic – we later found that he’d been sampling the delights of coffee shops and petrol stations along the route, and arrived safely at the hotel, though once again late for dinner…). A final slog was finally over with a blissful 3km downhill to the hotel. Though our singing couldn’t live up to the serenade from the hospice volunteers in Nysa (who knew that “Sto lat” had a second verse?!), we rounded off celebrating Dan’s birthday in style: cake, beer, and Cycle Europe friends old and new (including, via some newfangled technology, those across the Channel and across the pond).

Dzień rozpoczął się od zaskakująco łagodnego podjazdu, po zaskakująco dobrej nawierzchni, aż do zaskakująco malowniczego polsko-czeskiego przejścia granicznego. Stamtąd był równie łagodny zjazd. Tom wykorzystał to do próby pobicia rekordu prędkości na lądzie, podczas gdy reszta z nas zjechała znacznie spokojniej i spotkała się z nim na dole, z ulgą stwierdzając, że wszystkie jego kończyny są nienaruszone. Stopniowy 40-kilometrowy zjazd zaprowadził nas do Nysy, gdzie, po raz pierwszy w historii Cycle Europe, dotarlismy do hospicjum przed czasem. Ekipa skorzystała z tej bezprecedensowej okazji, by bez naszego, ciagle poganiajacego lidera,wykorzystac ta szansę na naprawienie przebitych opon, skorzystanie z jedynych bezpłatnych publicznych toalet w Polsce i ogólne wylegiwanie się.

Punktualnie dotarliśmy do hospicjum Sw. Arnolda Janssena w Nysie, gdzie przywitał nas dyrektor hospicjum oraz inni wolontariusze. Jako najmłodszy uczestnik, a tym samym atrakcja numer jeden, Gabatron został szybko przekazany do potrzymania każdemu członkowi zespołu hospicjum, a być może także niektórym przechodniom. W międzyczasie poznalismy zespol hospicjum, piętnastu pacjentach przebywających pod jego opieką oraz informacje o stu pacjentach, którymi hospicjum opiekuje się w ich własnych domach. Dla wielu członków zespołu była to pierwsza wizyta w hospicjum, więc spotkanie z zespołem i pacjentami było naprawdę otwierającym oczy doświadczeniem. Willie i Janusz przekazali dwa koncentratory tlenu, które są niezbędnym sprzętem w przypadku wielu nieuleczalnych chorób i z których każdy może być używany do pomocy wielu pacjentom. Miło nam było również usłyszeć, że sprzęt, który dostarczyliśmy podczas naszej ostatniej wizyty w Nysie w 2014 roku, jest nadal w użyciu!

Dobrze nakarmieni i napojeni (pomimo kilku trudnych sztućców), wróciliśmy na drogę - i co to była za droga. Pozornie niekończąca się droga , w upale, z minimalnym utwardzonym poboczem i zaskakującym natężeniem ruchu jak na wtorkową porę obiadową. Nigdy nie byliśmy szczęśliwsi, gdy po około dwudziestu kilometrach później zobaczylismy skręt w prawo, na znacznie przyjemniejsze boczne drogi, na których od czasu do czasu było nawet trochę cienia. Boczne drogi doprowadziły nas w końcu do Głubczyc, gdzie imponująca architektura została znacznie przyćmiona przez urok supermarketu Biedronka z klimatyzacją, zimnymi napojami i lodami. Przy temperaturze przekraczajacej 30 stopni Celsjusza, Tom zdecydował się na drastyczne środki i zafundował sobie wielopak arbuzowych lizaków.

Jak można się było spodziewać Tad nie był tam, gdzie się go spodziewaliśmy. On, jak rzadki ptak, wybiera swoje trasy a nam zostaja plotki ale niewiele konkretnych dowodów wskazujacych na jego miejsce pobytu. (Bez paniki - później okazało się, że próbował rozkoszy kawiarni i stacji benzynowych wzdłuż trasy i bezpiecznie dotarł do hotelu, choć po raz kolejny spóźnił się na kolację...). Ostatni odcinek zakończył się przyjemnym 3-kilometrowym zjazdem do hotelu. Choć nasze śpiewanie nie dorównało serenadzie wolontariuszy hospicjum w Nysie (kto wiedział, że "Sto lat" ma drugą zwrotkę?!), zakończyliśmy dzien świętowaniem urodzin Dana w wielkim stylu: tort, piwo i przyjaciele z Cycle Europe, starzy i nowi (w tym, dzięki nowatorskiej technologii, ci po drugiej stronie kanału La Manche i ci w USA). Wszystkiego najlepszego Dan - mamy nadzieję, że pojedziesz z nami na wiele kolejnych Cycle Europe (choć miejmy nadzieję, że uda nam się zorganizować chłodniejszą pogodę).

Day 2 started much like Day 1 ended with some navigation issues for early contender for Man of the Trip, Tad. (Un)fortunately Muggins was on hand to help giving Tad stern instructions to “follow the yellow line and do not touch anything else”. On the plus side, Tad’s struggles have finally made me feel like a net contributor after 10 gruelling years of annoying everyone else. Somehow, despite a good 5-10 minutes solving the navigation issue, we bypassed the rest of the group and remained ahead of them for at least an hour - something I was unaware of until Artur charged past me at 687658kph. Gradually everyone else caught up and we rode together through a mix of small Bohemian towns and countryside and up a not insubstantial hill until our first stop at the back of a supermarket in Nachod, near the Polish border. Unfortunately, the “Man of the Tour” contender didn’t get the memo, cue a puzzled discussion among the rest of the group, particularly after Janusz arrived having, unlike everyone else, failed to overtake him. Minutes later contact was established and it turned out he was already in Poland enjoying a coffee at a roadside café. How? None of us have fully established the answer.

Following the break, we trundled a couple of kilometres up the road to the Polish border for a group photo (sans Tad). Entering the heartland of the Alina Foundation we were welcomed by the familiar sight of Biedronka supermarket, Uwaga Pies signs on wooden gates and silhouettes of townscapes with big red crosses through them. Surprisingly it was at least 40km to the first John Paul II Statue. Before the Papa though was lunch. A pretty glorious Wild Boar Pierogi-based affair in a massive but – shock horror - completely empty restaurant. Needless to say, on arrival the Man of the Trip contender was nowhere to be seen. Cue further worried discussion. Worry we needn’t have – he emerged ninja-like at the end of everyone else’s first course. How had he got into Poland before us but arrived at lunch after us? None of us have fully established the answer.

After lunch and pre-Pope, we encountered a road with not one but three diggers doing who knows what, but they kindly allowed us to weave through ensuring we avoided a potentially lengthy reroute. We continued to wind through glorious countryside, past the Pope and up another largeish climb at the end of which Vincenc suspiciously needed to “tie his shoe” – absolutely nothing to do with him gasping for air of course.

The final part of the journey was an uneventful trudge down a busy highway. Uneventful that is other than the Man of the Trip appearing stealthlike in front of us (Vincenc and I, anyway). How? We dunno.

On this same stretch at least 34553324 light years before us, Artur suffered a puncture resulting in the one of cycling’s biggest shocks since the Lance Armstrong doping scandal – Janusz beat him to the hotel.

At the hotel we were ushered towards a metal container where our bikes would be stored. Not so reassuringly for those concerned for the safety of their bikes, the word Rowery was plastered in massive letters across it. However, given that the surroundings suggest that the last crime committed round here was in 1974, we should be okay.

Now it is 8pm, some are in bed, some are drinking Zywiec, Muggins is writing a blog, and we’re all just about ready for another huge ride. Tomorrow, however, we have some inspirational hospice visits to remind us what we’re here for…. being served sandwiches by nuns. ​

Welcome to Cycle Europe 2024! Today a group of thirteen brave cyclists stepped out into very mild drizzle and set out on their big adventure to Krakow. We were very nearly prevented from setting off at all, as the key to the bike room had mysteriously disappeared overnight. Thankfully the culprit was found when he sheepishly stumbled down to breakfast, and as penance will be writing tomorrow’s blog.

Eventually we did get out on the road, and made our way out of Prague on some really quite nice cycle lanes (though not before the tram lines had claimed their first, and hopefully only, sacrifice of the trip). We navigated the city, moving from beautiful medieval town to pleasant suburbs to industrial estate to Bohemian countryside. Finally, Artur and Willie decided they’d had enough time for the morning caffeine to kick in, and took up a blistering pace. The rest of us didn’t see them until our first rest stop – the traditional Lidl car park. Certain members of the group decided this was a bit too low-brow, and detoured to a coffee shop a few miles away. This is also commonly referred to as “getting lost”.

The sun soon came out, and we cycled through sunflower fields and along rivers to lunch. The sun soon went away again, and was replaced by more drizzle, but spirits were kept high by a lovely lunch in a beer garden. This provided the fuel needed for the last 35km push into Hradec Kralove, one of the oldest cities in Czechia (and the cobblestones to prove it). Some enjoyed a wander round the historic centre, others made use of the hotel pool and sauna, while still others were just a “Tad” late to dinner, having eschewed the use of modern navigation technology and attempting to cross Czechia based on some kind of homing-pigeon instinct that added on a couple of hours to the day. Thankfully, all are now fed, warm, and dry, and we’re looking forward to crossing into Poland tomorrow for our first taste of some hills.

Witamy na rajdzie rowerowym „Przez Europę dla polskich hospicjów 2024”! Dziś grupa trzynastu odważnych rowerzystów wyruszyła w podczas mżawki na swoją wielką przygodę do Krakowa. Niewiele brakowało, abyśmy w ogóle nie wyruszyli, ponieważ klucz do przechowalni rowerów w tajemniczy sposób zniknął w nocy. Na szczęście winowajca został odnaleziony, gdy zawstydzony pojawił się na śniadaniu i w ramach pokuty będzie pisał jutrzejszego bloga.

W końcu wyruszyliśmy w drogę i wyjechaliśmy z Pragi całkiem ładnymi ścieżkami rowerowymi (choć nie przed tym, jak linie tramwajowe pochłonęły pierwszą i miejmy nadzieję jedyną ofiarę tej podróży). Poruszaliśmy się po mieście, przechodząc od pięknego średniowiecznego miasta, przez przyjemne przedmieścia, tereny przemysłowe, aż po czeską wieś. W końcu Artur i Willie zdecydowali, że mieli wystarczająco dużo czasu, aby poranna kofeina zaczęła działać, i podjęli szybkie tempo. Reszta z nas nie widziała ich aż do naszego pierwszego postoju - tradycyjnego parkingu Lidla. Niektórzy członkowie grupy uznali, że to zbyt mało eleganckie miejsce i udali się do oddalonej o kilka kilometrów kawiarni. Jest to również powszechnie określane jako "zgubienie się".

Wkrótce wyszło słońce i pojechaliśmy przez pola słoneczników i wzdłuż rzek na lunch. Słońce wkrótce znów zaszło i zastąpiła je mżawka, ale humory podtrzymał wspaniały obiad w ogródku piwnym. Dostarzyło to paliwa potrzebnego do pokonania ostatnich 35 km do Hradec Kralove, jednego z najstarszych miast w Czechach (i bruku, aby to udowodnić). Niektórzy cieszyli się wędrówką po historycznym centrum, inni skorzystali z hotelowego basenu i sauny, a jeszcze inni spóźnili się na kolację, rezygnując z nowoczesnej technologii nawigacyjnej i próbując przejechać przez Czechy w oparciu o instynkt gołębia pocztowego, który dodał kilka godzin do dnia. Na szczęście wszyscy są teraz najedzeni, rozgrzani i wysuszeni, i nie mogą się doczekać jutrzejszego przekraczania granicy polsko-czeskiej, aby po raz pierwszy posmakować wzgórz.

As the majority of our motley crew of cyclists assembled in Prague before the official start, we thought it was only sensible to try to iron out some of the usual first day issues by assembling our bikes and taking them for a warm-up ride. Fortunately, we were kept busy with plenty of problems. Bike assembly is never a smooth process, with one “vintage” machine in particular causing our resident mechanics Dave and Tom some serious headaches. 

We headed out a whole hour later than planned, only to be held up within minutes by a series of mechanicals. Two snapped chains, a dislodged seat post and some loose handlebars were fixed, and eventually we were on our way to see the sights. Our 12km ride was a Cycle Europe in miniature – there were tramlines, cobbles, climbs and some exceptionally imposing brutalist architecture. Bikes and riders thoroughly tested, we dispersed into the beautiful old town of Prague, for sightseeing, snacks, and a visit to the only bike shop open on a Saturday afternoon.

In the evening, we braved a torrential downpour and a thunderstorm to get to our pre-ride briefing over dinner in a Georgian restaurant. Ewa explained what the next few days had in store, and baby Gabi chipped in with a few insightful comments of her own. It was great to catch up with old and new friends before the ride ahead. With tummies full of good Czech beer and some heavy Georgian cheese, we headed to our hotel, ready for a good night’s sleep before tomorrow’s official first day - 115km from Prague to Hradec Kralove.

Ponieważ większość naszej ekipy rowerzystów zebrała się w Pradze przed oficjalnym startem, pomyśleliśmy, że rozsądnie będzie spróbować rozwiązać niektóre z typowych problemów pierwszego dnia, składając nasze rowery i zabierając je na rozgrzewkę. Na szczęście nie obyło się bez problemów. Montaż roweru nigdy nie jest łatwym procesem, a w szczególności jedna "zabytkowa" maszyna przyprawiła naszych mechaników Dava i Toma o poważny ból głowy.

Wyruszyliśmy całą godzinę później niż planowaliśmy, by w ciągu kilku minut zostać zatrzymanym przez serię usterek mechanicznych. Dwa zerwane łańcuchy, zle ustawione siodełko i luźna kierownica zostały naprawione i w końcu byliśmy w drodze, aby zobaczyć zabytki. Nasza 12-kilometrowa przejażdżka była miniaturą Cycle Europe - były tramwaje, kostka brukowa, podjazdy i wyjątkowo imponująca brutalistyczna architektura. Po dokładnym przetestowaniu rowerów i rowerzystów rozeszliśmy się po pięknej praskiej starówce, aby zwiedzić miasto, zjeść przekąski i odwiedzić jedyny sklep rowerowy otwarty w sobotnie popołudnie.

Wieczorem stawiliśmy czoła ulewie i burzy, aby dotrzeć na obiad i instrukcje przed jazdą podczas kolacji w gruzińskiej restauracji. Ewa wyjaśniła nam, co czeka nas w najbliższych dniach, a mała Gabi dodała kilka swoich wnikliwych komentarzy. Wspaniale było spotkać się ze starymi i nowymi przyjaciółmi przed dalszą jazdą. Z brzuchami pełnymi dobrego czeskiego piwa i ciężkiego gruzińskiego sera udaliśmy się do naszego hotelu, gotowi na dobry sen przed jutrzejszym oficjalnym pierwszym dniem - 115km z Pragi  do Hradec Kralove.
